Pre-breeding
Mare
- Good health and good weight
- Up to date on vaccines
- Up to date on deworming
- Dental examination (and equilibration if needed) by a veterinarian
- Genetic testing as needed
- Place the mare under lights 60 days before anticipated breeding date
- Transrectal palpation with ultrasound, vaginal examination, and uterine culture with cytology
- If the mare is older, a uterine biopsy will help to determine uterine quality
Stallion Selection
- Good fertility and conception rate
- Able to ship to mare
- Free of sexually transmitted diseases
- Genetic testing as needed
Breeding
- Provide veterinarian with mare’s breeding history
- Provide veterinarian with semen shipping schedule
