Saginaw Valley Equine is looking for a full-time Equine Sports Medicine Assistant.

You would learn the role of an Equine Vet Assistant with a focus primarily on sports medicine.

Requirements include having a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a truck and trailer. Traveling out of town, and out of state, to farm calls and horse shows is common. Overnight trips are often necessary.

Sports Med Assistants must have excellent communication skills, outstanding horse handling skills, and need to be open to learning new skills. You will work within the SVEC Sports Medicine Team planning, packing, and attending some of the largest Quarter Horse Shows in the country. The ability to connect with your fellow teammates and clients is crucial. Your time will be split between working in the clinic and working on the road.

All veterinary assistants are responsible for helping veterinarians perform diagnostic examinations and aid in providing treatment for equine patients. Other duties include performing record keeping, clerical duties related to animal patient care and treatment, and providing various support services to other staff. This position requires basic knowledge of veterinary technology, hospital operations and services, data transcription, the basic rules and regulations governing patient treatments, and a practical knowledge of the standard procedures, veterinary records, and terminology used in an equine practice.

Job Duties

  • Organize and execute plans for incoming and outgoing patients, exam rooms, and isolation areas
  • Assist veterinarians in client communications
  • Provide technical support to veterinarians and other veterinary technicians in the delivery of primary care, diagnostic services, and disease control
  • Assist in patient medical evaluation
  • Assist with administering medications and treatments
  • Restrain patients
  • Collect and prepare laboratory samples
  • Collect patient medical history
  • Collect client contact information
  • Maintain complete and accurate medical records
  • Assist with surgical procedures
  • Assist with diagnostic procedures
  • Assist with anesthesia administration and monitoring
  • Record fees for materials and services
  • Assist with fluid administration and replacement therapy
  • Assist staff in performing critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and functionally organized service area
  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance of equipment
  • Perform maintenance service checks and minor repairs to assigned equipment
  • Maintain supply inventory and replenish stock
  • Follow state and federal regulations of controlled drug log

This job will require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, off-site work, and on-call duty.
