Emergency Surgery

"I really valued Dr. Williams' personal phone call
to me when I sent her a colic surgery."

Margaret Shreiner, DVM

Saginaw Valley Equine Clinic provides emergency surgery 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Common surgeries and treatments we provide for your clients include:

  • Abdominal surgery for diagnosis and treatment of pain (i.e. colic, which is caused by many lesions including large colon displacements or torsions
  • Small intestinal problems (i.e. strangulating lipomas, epiploic foramen entrapments, gastrosplenic ligament entrapments.)
  • Resection and anastomosis of a damaged segment of bowel to relieve abdominal pain.
  • Arthroscopic surgery for injuries or infections within joints or tendon sheaths.
  • Repair of complex wounds.
  • Assisted anesthetic recovery for high-risk cases.

After surgery, horses are monitored 24 hours a day. We check vital parameters several times each day. IV fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and anti-pain medications are given for several days. Horses are slowly re-introduced to food and water. We closely monitor appetite and manure production.

Saginaw Valley Equine Clinic has the expertise and equipment to provide you and your clients with routine and advanced surgical procedures. Our full-service facility includes well-qualified anesthesia and operating room staff.
