Pre-Purchase Exams

Pre-Purchase Exams Saginaw Valley Equine Clinic

At Saginaw Valley Equine Clinic, we provide evaluations for all your horse’s needs, including pre-purchase exams, lameness exams, fertility evaluations and performance horse comprehensive exams. Preventive medicine and routine patient care, including gastroscopy to detect ulcers, are also among our routine evaluations.

Sports medicine diagnosis and treatment is a significant portion of our practice background. This background and imaging expertise allows our veterinarians to perform thorough examinations prior to a buyer's purchase of performance horses. Our veterinarians work with local, regional, national, and international buyers in the acquisition of their investment. We work closely with your veterinarian at home and if need arises, we can share results and digital imaging with them in a timely manner to help ensure a seamless transfer of ownership.

SVEC emphasizes the importance of evaluating your horse investment with genuine concern for the future welfare of the match between horse and owner. Whether you want a horse as a family pet, a pleasure mount, a breeding animal or a high-performance athlete, you stand the best chance of getting one that meets your needs by investing in our pre-purchase exam. SVEC has the most up-to-date equipment, superb facilities and the expertise to give you peace of mind as you consider the following:

  • General Health: What sort of condition is this horse really in?
  • Resale Value: How will he look in a year when you’re selling him?
  • Athletic Soundness: Is he going to hold up under the rigors of training?
  • Breeding Soundness: Will this horse retain or have value in the breeding shed?
  • A Good Match: Does this horse display the disposition we need?

SVEC will thoroughly outline the procedures until you feel comfortable with the exam prior to commencing. Our imaging systems allow for our digital radiograph, ultrasound or endoscopic images to be burned to a CD and handed to the buyer or sent to the buyer’s veterinarian (which is encouraged and included in the exam price).

Lameness exams are a primary focus at SVEC. A thorough physical examination and history are followed by observing the horse’s movement in hand and under saddle. Subtle lameness issues are frequently only appreciated when the horse is ridden. We focus on diagnosing the problem to restore freedom of movement and take away the source of stiffness and soreness. Our proven exam techniques, low-risk diagnostic nerve blocks and high-quality imaging investigate the source and are keys to our success.
