Derek Maxwell, LVT

Derek Maxwell, LVT Saginaw Valley Equine Clinic

I have lived in Central Michigan all my life. I currently reside in Clare County with my wife, Chrisi. Chrisi and I have been married since July 2014. Together, we have 5 Quarter Horses, 5 Labrador Retrievers and a very mischievous barn cat, appropriately named Sassy. I graduated from Baker College with an Associates Degree of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology.

What do you do in your free time?:

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and all of our animals. I also enjoy hunting deer, waterfowl and upland game birds. I find great satisfaction in raising Lab puppies. Finally, I enjoy working with and training my yearling colts that I have raised from foals.

How did you discover your love of horses?:

I have been around horses ever since I can remember. My grandfather was a horse trainer for many years and I spent a lot of time at the farm. I started riding around the age of 4 and have been riding ever since. I showed my horse in 4-H, Open Shows and High School Equestrian. I do not currently show, but still enjoy saddling up for a leisurely ride.

What is your role at SVEC?:

As a Veterinary Technician my main role is anesthetizing horses during elective and emergency surgical procedures. I also assist the veterinarians in appointments, provide nursing care, perform treatments to hospitalized patients, offer general client education and provide a safe clinical environment for the clients, patients and veterinarians.

What is your favorite part of your job?:

My favorite part of my job is working with horses! My passion for them started at a young age and has continued to grow into my adulthood. I have a strong interest in equine anesthesia and restraint.

What are your greatest skills & how do they benefit horses and their owners?:

My coworkers say that my greatest attribute is my height. I believe that my many years of horse experience, maturity and attention to detail are beneficial to my work at SVEC. These assets equip me with the ability to provide the best veterinary care for the patients while working to exceed the expectations of our clients.
