So You Want to Breed Your Mare - A Checklist

Pre-breeding

Mare

  • Good health and good weight
  • Up to date on vaccines
  • Up to date on deworming
  • Dental examination (and equilibration if needed) by a veterinarian
  • Genetic testing as needed
  • Place the mare under lights 60 days before anticipated breeding date
  • Transrectal palpation with ultrasound, vaginal examination, and uterine culture with cytology
  • If the mare is older, a uterine biopsy will help to determine uterine quality

Stallion Selection

  • Good fertility and conception rate
  • Able to ship to mare
  • Free of sexually transmitted diseases
  • Genetic testing as needed

Breeding

  • Provide veterinarian with mare's breeding history
  • Provide veterinarian with semen shipping schedule
