This year we are proud to announce that the 2017 Jessie Maxwell Scholarship Barrel Race will be co-sanctioned by On the Road with Dawn and Clea Show Productions and the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) on Memorial Day weekend. This show will be running in conjunction with the Dick Berg Memorial Weekend Rodeo presented by Super Kicker Rodeo Production. We are excited to be combining these events to make this a weekend full of fun, laughter, and memories!

Our goal is to create a unique experience that you will not get anywhere else in Michigan. This is your only chance to run your horse multiple times in both a rodeo and premier barrel show setting. Look for the show bill and entry forms in the coming weeks. If you have any questions regarding the show, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. The JM Scholarship Barrel Race History

For the past ten years, a memorial horse show has been held at the Gladwin County Fairgrounds in remembrance of Jessie Maxwell. In the early years, the show was hosted by the Gladwin County 4-H Horse Leaders and as the years passed the show was transitioned to the family and friends of Jessie. The net proceeds raised from this show benefit the Jessie Maxwell Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Jessie Maxwell Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund History

The Jessie Maxwell Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was created to provide financial assistance to Gladwin County students seeking to pursue education beyond high school. Jessie was an honest, caring, goal oriented individual who was an active member of Gladwin. From an early age, Jessie's grandfather introduced him to horses and competitive showing. Through his interactions with horses, Jessie demonstrated passion for helping others. He graduated from Beaverton High School in May of 2006 and shortly after enrolled in trade school to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming an electrician.

On September 13, 2006, Jessie's life was tragically ended when he was involved in a fatal automobile accident. Soon after Jessie's death, Lisa Hartley (Jessie's mom) set about to establish a scholarship fund to help college students achieve high academic goals. The Jessie Maxwell Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund offers scholarships to Gladwin and Beaverton graduating students with financial need who display academic achievement, a commitment to serving others (in school, in the community or at home), a strong work ethic, and leadership qualities.

Since 2006, students from Gladwin County have been assisted with nearly $20,000 in scholarships. To raise money for this scholarship family, friends, and community members have worked together to host fundraising events. The family and friends of Jessie Maxwell desire to increase scholarship awards in order to aid students with the rising costs of a college education and carry on the legacy that Jessie left behind.
